Media in the Pub – the business models that will support journalism

Media in the Pub has come around again. This time, we’ve asked four of the brightest thinkers to take a (hypothetical) ailing media company and lay out a vision for its future.

Our speakers are:
Tim Burrowes, Founding Editor of Mumbrella
David McGrath, GM – News & Sport at Telstra BigPond
Bronwen Clune, Founder and CEO of Norg Media
James Tuckerman, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Anthill

The brief we’ve given them was this:

You’re newly in control of The Australian National And Local Output Group (A.N.A.L.O.G). What would you do to save it? Extreme solution: sell it and start something else radically different. Minimal solution: do what you’ve always done best, but having to continually cut costs? What would you do – justify it with numbers, discuss changes to distribution, content mix or market or other options.

We’ve given all our panellists the current vital statistics of ANALOG; its people, its audiences, its platforms, its costs, its culture and how the money is trending. It’s the discussion we’ve all had -normally over red wine- “you know what I’d do if I was king for a day…” so get ready to compare your vision of the future with theirs.

Media in the pub lives again!

I’ve been working with Fergus Pitt to get Media In The Pub up and running again. I was keen to see a regular space for media people to talk about industry issues and debates, and after meeting Fergus at a Progressive Lunch I got excited about the direction he wanted to take it.

I’m hoping we can run it bi-monthly, and we have some interesting stuff planned. First presentation of the resurrected Media in the Pub is next Tuesday:

The eminent photojournalist, Walkley judge and photo editor Wen Huang is in town next Tuesday, hosted by Walkley Foundation/Media Alliance. So we decided to borrow a glimmer of Wen’s limelight to announce the re-entry of Media In The Pub in Sydney’s media conversation.

Wen Huang will be in conversation with Walkey winner David Dare Parker, one of the original co-founders of Reportage, a Director of FotoFreo Photographic Festival and Walkley Advisory Board Member.

You can RSVP for this talk at facebook or send Fergus an email. fergus [at] fergle [dot] com

Would love to see you all there.
