Fee, who’s doing a very interesting outreach job Digital Program Officer with the Australia Council for the Arts, asked this question on Twitter:
I’m collating a list of creative tech people/projects who don’t self-define as artist/artworks. Is that u?! Pls msg me and pls forward!
I’ve talked about my professional identity here before, but it bears repeating. I’m a producer. I’m social media producer right now, but frankly, I don’t think there’s a great deal of difference between being a producer and being a social media producer. Social media is just another form of media. It has a different set of affordances and norms, and a different set of risks to be managed, but ultimately the way you engage with the role is similar. As a producer, my job is helping other people tell their stories.
There are a lot of creative elements involved in that, from web design, to scriptwriting, to cinematography, to editing, to interaction design. But the key difference for me is that my focus is the telling of other people’s stories, not my own.
My main creative pursuit outside of work is photography, but I enjoy photography because it’s not an artistic pursuit for me. It’s part of my filmmaking practice – particularly shot composition – but I enjoy it because it’s only for my benefit.
